In simple words, text check point verifies entire text in the object where as text area CP, veries text only in the specified region(done through dragging mouse) in that object.
You can have any number of text area CP But only one Text CP(though you can have duplicates all doing same task) on an object 
From the Bible (QTP help
 )Text Area Checkpoint. Enables you to check that a text string appears within a defined area in a Windows application, according to specified criteria. Text Checkpoint. Enables you to check that the text is displayed in a screen, window, or Web page, according to specified criteria. Do you see the difference?
