HP UFT- very fundamental question

I have a very basic question.

My application is an Engineering software (Computer aided analysis software). It is NOT a web application.

How do I ascertain whether HP UFT will work with my application i.e. how to ascertain that I can automate test cases of my application with HP UFT?

Can anyone please point me in the right direction?
